What to do when you miss your ex
When your relationship ended, you felt relieved, excited, and euphoric about your newfound freedom. You blasted off into the single world, and found peace and tranquility in meeting new people and exploring new ventures.
Every part of your being knew it was for the best, and then suddenly (maybe a few months or weeks after the initial break up) you’re suddenly feeling the pangs of loss, and you find yourself sobbing over old photos or mementos from the past. The obvious conclusion is that you miss your ex.
We all deal with pain differently. Some of us hibernate while others cry on a friends shoulder. Our feelings of hurt or loss after a breakup can sometimes feel overwhelming, but we eventually get past them by remembering the very reasons the breakup happened in the first place.
Grieving is part and parcel of the breakup process. It’s absolutely unavoidable yet imperative for recovery. We must come to grips with the reality of our present situation – our new life without our partner. That’s why it’s not a bad sign that you’re missing your ex as it a positive step in the right direction. The important decisions you make in the midst of longing for your ex will show you how far you’ve come since the breakup. Are you longing to call him/her? Wanting to get back together? The latter thoughts are strong indication that you’re a) a normal human being and b) are still in early phases of post heartbreak.
If you miss your ex, don’t call or make plans to see them. Just let it be. Let those feelings consume you, and genuinely grieve for what was lost. It’s vital. What is broken sometimes cannot be fixed, but you always have yourself to work, and trust us, you will heal with time. Accepting the end is the start of a new chapter in your life where there is freedom, mystery and self-discovery. Choose to embrace it. Choose to live life to the fullest by confronting the reality of the situation, but refusing to let it get you down.
Here are some other things you can do if you miss your ex:
– Call friend and express your feelings
– Get creative – write down your thoughts, grab a paintbrush, or play music.
– Read an inspiring book – “Eat, Pray, Love” is a favorite amongst many new singles
– Hit the gym and sweat out those emotions
